Steinfeld will play the role of Kate Bishop in Hawkeye, the protege to Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton/Hawkeye. Recently, she discussed her preparation for the role (which involved countless hours of training with a bow) as well as what Renner had shared with her towards the start of production on Hawkeye.

“I wanted [the archery] to be second nature by the time I got out to Atlanta to shoot, but the first time we met, Jeremy was like, ‘Listen, you’re going to get there and you’re not even shooting a real arrow, it’s all CGI. But I was still grateful to have the mechanics down,” shared Steinfeld during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. In addition to her training, Steinfeld further explained her process of watching many videos of professionals handling the bow to familiarize herself with the weapon and archery in general. While Renner does have a point when mentioning how much CGI will be involved, Steinfeld’s dedication to learning how to handle a bow will definitely create a more grounded and realistic portrayal for fans to become attached to when they meet Kate Bishop.

Hawkeye will focus on Barton post-blip in New York City during the Holidays as he is forced to team up with the young archer Kate Bishop to stop enemies from his past when he was Ronin (Ronin was briefly shown in Avengers: Endgame). Created by Mad Men and Bridgerton’s Jonathan Igla, the spin-off phase four series will also include other MCU newcomers like Florence Pugh’s Yelena from Black Widow, who was instructed by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to hunt down the man (Barton) she thinks is responsible for her sister’s death in that film’s post-credits scene.

With Disney Plus’ other newly released Marvel Studios series like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…?, Hawkeye will be looking to continue the success and offer a fresh perspective to the MCU moving forward in phase four. Hawkeye will also star Vera Farmiga as Eleanor Bishop, Kate’s mother, Fra Free as the mercenary Kazi, Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne, Barton’s old mentor, Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo, a deaf character who can perfectly copy others’ movements, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez, Maya’s father. A spin-off series based on Cox’s character is already in development.

Hawkeye premieres on November 24th, 2021, on Disney Plus.
